How Successful Are We?

On Vancouver Island, hundreds of employers have collaborated with us to help both their businesses and our clients. Employers comment on the enthusiasm our clients bring to the workplace and the support and availability of VIVRS staff when setting up placements and training new workers. VIVRS clients not only contribute to the productivity of companies where they work, but also to the community reputation and morale within these businesses.

VIVRS has been successful in placing over 70% of our clients in employment situations, including clients living with physical, mental, developmental, emotional and neurological disabilities.

Our clients report an increase in confidence and self-esteem, and a feeling that they can make a genuine contribution. In ratings completed regularly by an independent third party, 90% of clients found the services provided by VIVRS to be good or excellent. No clients rated the service as poor.

Our staff has a reputation for exceeding all outcomes contracted by our funding agencies, in an effective and timely manner.

In the past fourteen years, VIVRS has grown from one dedicated professional serving the Nanaimo Regional District to a team of ten providing a variety of services throughout Vancouver Island. Throughout this growth, VIVRS has maintained an average turnover rate of less than 3%, indicating excellent retention of skilled personnel.

Success Stories: Joseph

Joseph was referred to VIVRS because he has a permanent disability that affects his speech. Over the years, Joseph found this to be a serious barrier to employment. Joseph had taken some courses in Food Prep and Dishwashing at Malaspina University College, but had never tested his skills in a commercial environment. VIVRS offered Joseph a six-week work experience placement in a small restaurant, with on-site support from a VIVRS counsellor. Joseph gradually gained confidence and proved to have a real aptitude for the work.

A second placement was arranged for Joseph at Ricky's Restaurant, where he could assess his performance in a busier and more structured atmosphere. Within two weeks, the manager at Ricky's notified VIVRS that he wished to hire Joseph.

Four years later, Joseph was voted employee of the year by his peers. In a secret ballot, 48 of the 49 staff members voted for Joseph - Joseph, of course, voted for someone else! He was overwhelmed with the honour, but it was one that was well deserved.

Joseph was grateful to be given the chance to show what he could do, with the help of VIVRS' work experience program and Ricky's Restaurant.
